Student Biography

Ying Chang, Australian, born in Taiwan; lives and works in Sydney, Australia.

Art is a lifetime passion. Her exploration began with her study of Chinese painting in the 1980's. After migrating to Australia in late 1990's she began to examine Western art forms.

This journey between Eastern and Western cultures is replayed on her canvas as she seeks to combine elements of the two cultures in innovative ways. Resisting following trends or schools, she seeks inspiration by examining the Western environment she currently inhabits through the lens of her Chinese past. Her abstract paintings try to express the harmony she finds in this combination of Eastern thought transported to a new continent.

In 2003, she became interested in landscape photography. Her photography work has roots in the ideas of conceptual art and everyday thought. An interesting site can give rise to an investigation of that space and the way it's used. This approach is often concerned more with exploitation of that space rather than an idealization of natural beauty.
