Student Biography

When were you born?

In 1981, I was born in sunny Singapore!

What is your background?

I have been living in Singapore my whole life until 3 years ago when I decided to come over to Australia to study. My Dad was born in Indonesia and migrated to Singapore when he was a lad. Also a migrant, my Mum came over to Singapore when she was just a 1 year-old baby. My parents had a jackpot of giving birth to 5 girls, including me who is 4th in line. Coming from a family who adore art and music, my eldest sister is a trumpeter, my 2nd elder sister is a piano teacher, my 3rd sister a traditional Chinese dancer as well as a graphic designer, and my little sister is still in schooling. Me, I'm basically a trombone player for 14 years, trained in theatre and making videos now.

What inspired you to become an artist or designer?

Being an artist has always been on my mind, even after I completed my first degree of Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences in Singapore. It's my dream to make things from my hands and indulge in the satisfaction of my achievement time and time again.

Being trained in theatre/stage during my 1st degree and working as a part-time actress for 2 years, I was also very keen in continuing the creation of performance work, however, this time in the arena of video and films. Also, I want my art to mean something to the public, to the people who view it, to the society my art is shown to.

Who would you like to work in collaboration with or create something for?

I wish to be involved in the making of real feature films and seeing my work being screened in the cinema or galleries. I'm interested to work in video production companies too, as well as advertising companies who may need innovative video artists to think of concepts and be involved in the filming and editing process. It is also my interest to work with different artists and continue to learn in my artistic journey.

How has your work evolved over the past 3 years?

Over the years of theatre training and COFA study, I developed a social conscience in my art work. I have sought to make my art to mean something to the viewer, to let them be able to relate to others as well as their selves. I am glad to say my concepts are better developed and not so literal as before. However, they still contain a tinge of my Singaporean culture. Typically, I draw my inspirations on the current interesting issues that are pertinent in my society or basically, anything that's dramatic in my journey of life!

How can art and design contribute to society?

Without art and design, the society is boring! Art and design are the voice of the society. They can transform a person's environment and empower their mindsets. Art can be an illumination of something which people have never seen or noticed before, and this can mean either a dingy corner, a concept or a truth which no one dares to speak out loud.

Where would you like to work after university?

A production house or in an art gallery. Or, working with an established artist. Or basically anywhere I can get a job to make money for my videos and art.
