Student Biography
My studio practice for this year; 'Mother of Millions', uses masks as a platform for diverse physical modifications that recall practices of tattooing and bodily mortification. Through a trompe l'oeil treatment of the body, illusionary mortification is employed in the same manner a tattooist applies hearts on the chest, or daggers piercing the flesh of the forearm. Emblematic forms like the bone, diamond and Datura are applied to the body in an examination of the metaphorical aspects of weed classification. The application of a weed status to people is a concern examined through an ongoing botanical survey that spans aspects of architectural and bodily ruin and focuses on a pool of 150 weed species that inhabit the edges of Sydney's urban sprawl.
