Inspiration for This Work

Yoshiko Wadas books on traditional Japanese Shibori Techniques provided the inspiration for these contemporary designs.

Student Biography

When were you born?

On the 6th of September, 1984, at the Royal Women's Hospital in Paddington.

What is your background?

I was born in Sydney, so were my parents and grandparents... Originally, my Father's side of the family were from Ireland and Sweden while my Mother's side were from Wales, England and Ireland.

What inspired you to become an artist or designer?

The paintings of Francis Bacon and Brett Whiteley would definitely have to be my original inspirations however, in recent years the driving force has been the work of Yoshiko Wada.

Who would you like to work in collaboration with or create something for?

I'd love to be able to work on a project with Japanese textiles artist Yoshiko Wada.

Otherwise, I'd love to have Dallas Dellaforce turn some of my textiles into wearables.

How has your work evolved over the past 3 years?

When I arrived at COFA I couldn't thread a needle. Now I can expertly spin, weave and specialize in a number of dye techniques, including shibori and eco-dyeing.

How can art and design contribute to society?

My contemporary textiles, artworks and designs often find their basis in traditional techniques nearing extinction. I hope that society might find new and exciting uses for them, especially the more environmentally friendly amongst them.
