Student Biography

When were you born?

The first day in the astrological sign of Virgo, in the year of 1982.

What is your background?

I am a Singaporean Chinese, I came to Australia 3 years ago to pursue art, something which I desire to do. My immediate family, Mum and Sis, and myself have not stayed together for extended periods, because we have been constantly moving around and exploring new terrains.

What inspired you to become an artist or designer?

As a child, I was entrance by David Copperfield's magic performances. When I grew up, I conceived that magic is creating a state of mind, with the poetic language of enchantment and illusion. And art is my channel for creating magic.

Who would you like to work in collaboration with or create something for?

I would like to collaborate with Tim Burton and Hayao Miyazaki to create a sensory and emotional experience with our cross-disciplinary traits. Fabricating the melancholic clumsiness of adolescents, ruminating on the importance of self-reliance/selflessness and challenges of growing up while retaining the child-likeness in ourselves.

How has your work evolved over the past 3 years?

Embarking in an impetuous and spontaneous fashion, artworks created earlier revealed a sense of haphazard freedom of one who is bold and flexible, but not very directional. Now, I am like a bird in Valery's sense, my attitudes have gradually evolved to that of precision and determination while maintaining the creed for freedom and wilful naivety.

How can art and design contribute to society?

The world is interesting when people reinvent. But the world WAS already beautiful.

Where would you like to work after university?

I want to be an apprentice, so I can learn from the masters and listen to their interesting life stories. I want to work in construction, so I can use big tools and machineries. Most of all I want to be a travelling artist, so I can see more of the beauty of God's creation.
