Inspiration for This Work

Hidden Nature is a combined graphics/textiles project that explores the concept of narrative graphics.

We forget that nature is a strong & sometimes dark force. This idea of hidden nature is explored visually through three main stories; the tree, the poppy & the apple.

These stories of wicked fruit & deadly flowers are intriguing; filled with danger, beauty, sex & death: all the things that we as a modern audience have come to expect of a great tale.

Forget pretty wallflowers & look closely as nature reveals to you her hidden side, a seedy, intriguing underworld: Hidden Nature.

The story of the tree is the story of life, death and regeneration. The ancient Egyptians believed that man stood between the tree of life and the tree of death, holding a twig of both. It is humble image deeply symbolic of the transience of human life & the enduring presence of nature.

Student Biography

Born in Lima, Peru. Growing up with a South American Mother & a British/Australian Father, who share a love of culture & travel, has broadened my horizons in so many ways.

Even from a young age, I have always had a passion for design, art, music, culture... anything & everything creative. For me studying design was an obvious choice & during my years at COFA I have come to specialise in graphics and textiles.

I take inspiration from everything around me & have a fresh approach to each project. I favour a hand rendered aesthetic, as I believe that there is something compellingly beautiful about objects & images that retain a mark of their creator. Computers can do fantastic things but images created solely in computer programs often seem cold and a bit soulless to me. I love to draw, photograph, photocopy, cut, layer, screen print; to use any form of analogue technique to create elements or starting points for my designs, which I then develop & finish digitally. My designs are best described as bold yet approachable.
