Student Biography

Robyn Buchanan came to Cofa as a mature aged student after a successful career in web design in Sydney and London. She co-managed small web agency zero-g with clients in the arts, music & entertainment industries. In 2003 the zero-g site for UK band Goldfrapp won the MTV Web Award, beating the competition from sites such as Madonna and Marilyn Manson. In 2006, zero-g was personally commissioned by Anthony Keidis of Red Hot Chili Peppers to create the website design concept that coincided with the launch of their new album ‘Stadium Arcadium’.

Robyn’s artistic practice is very much sculptural, moving away from the digital world and into 3D space. Her work focuses on themes of identity and ‘the individual’ within the current social, technological and political climate.

Concepts in her art fluctuate from investigating the microscopic in an idea or object to the expanding and evolving external environment. She is interested in the science of the body - internal systems, functions, networks and relationships, transformation and exchange. But also how that body interacts and engages with its external environment. Artworks often stem from a ‘ready-made’ which she subverts or dislocates from their original meaning. Tensions and contradictions often embody the work, and there is always a strong conceptual presence.

Robyn is influenced by artists such as Mario Merz, Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Rebecca Horn and the great Buckminster Fuller. She is inspired by the creative process of transforming and communicating an idea into 3 dimensional space.
