Student Biography

Penny Spankie - installation, performance and video artist.

Categorizing her practise is not a simple task, Penny works best using these art practise titles - installation - performance - video as individual mediums. The work is created using both her relationship with these mediums and her concepts. They are used to push and play out her initial concept, ending the final work as a 3-5min video.

In saying this, Penny's past is as colourful as her personality and perspective on the world, which is reflected sometimes all too clearly in her work. She offers a playful look into her world or a confronting rawness..

Now at 31 years of age, Penny Spankie is a full time fine arts student, who runs an artist run performance space & gallery in Darlinghurst "the site office", works part time in her original trade - of graphic design, has two places of residence, divorced 7yrs, single, no mortgage, no debt and no kids. Breaking the moulds of her strict Christian upbringing, that once was her small world for 24yrs.

Penny uses her work is her own spiritual journey a visual mind map, cataloguing each happening, emotional, spiritual and material experience with both worlds.

Using everyday items, craft and her body. Her body represents her inner self, her own self-image and how others may see her. Penny also explores the idea of her body as a unit, rather than as a woman or gender.

She professes not to be a feminist, saying "I am but one, one person at that, who happens to be a woman. I am proud to be a woman, but I do not try to represent women. I am only trying to be true to myself and what my inner self is trying to say, artistically - freedom comes from being true to yourself."
