Inspiration for This Work

This is a LED poi dance performance I did at EarthDance 07. The costume I created to be the spokesman of McDonalds on Mars. The entire suit and the poi lit up with LEDs at night.

Student Biography

Matthew Robert Parsons was born the middle child of 9, with the three youngest children having intellectual disabilities. They were raised in the tee totalling Mormon faith on a dairy farm in the American Rocky Mountains. Having no belief in this religion as well as being gay in this environment, where neither was accepted, gave Matthew a unique childhood. At the age of 18 Matthew immigrated to Sydney where he met his current partner who is 27 years his senior.

These elements of his personal background all combine in Matthew's artworks which range from the humorous to the disturbing but all have the central theme of probing human nature and modern society to examine its illogicality. His favourite themes are power relations, manipulation, revenge, sex, censorship, ostracisation, and self-destruction, all presented in a discordantly light-hearted way. He focuses entirely on concept and content as precedent over medium, therefore fluctuating between video and sound installation as well as live performance but most often combining all three in his works. Having competent skills in carpentry, computer programming, acting, theatre and film directing, photography, drawing, and painting, Matthew moves fluidly through the various aspects of his artistic production.

He strives to entertain and as well as give his audience insight into the many ways of interpreting what it is to be human.
