Inspiration for This Work

My intention was for the final piece to have a sense of movement, flexibility and elegance reflecting the nature of a Pelican and the way that it uses its beak as a scoop. I am attracted to the soft, stretchy pouch, which lead me to the idea of stretching silk tulle over a stainless steel wire frame. Throughout the design process, I focussed more on the action rather than interpreting the word 'scoop' in a literal sense.

Student Biography

When were you born?

I was born in Sydney in 1983.

What is your background?

In 1985, my family moved to England and we returned to Sydney 12 years later in 1997. Originally, my family came from Berlin, Germany.

What inspired you to become an artist or designer?

When I was younger, I spent a lot of time drawing my surrounding built environment. My interest in architecture has played a major role in my jewellery practice through the exploration of form and texture.

How has your work evolved over the past 3 years?

Through my years at COFA, and experiencing a semester at the Utrecht School of Arts, my work has evolved both conceptually and technically in both jewellery design and graphic design.

Where would you like to work after university?

I hope to continue my jewellery practice in a studio and then eventually find a gallery to represent me. I am also interested in book design and would like to gain experience in that area of graphic design.
