Inspiration for This Work

POCKET is an investigation into consumption patterns in order to reduce the impact we have on our surrounding environment. With the population increasing at a nervously rapid rate the world’s resources are being threatened by our ever-growing needs. This is intensified by our disconnection to and lack of understanding of how these systems work.

From its origins, design formed through the familiar. Through this process, houses and the consequent cities grew as a reflection of the body. Our society currently views these structures as machines making it hard to connect or feel any real emotion around them. By viewing them in a body-centred way, a relationship is formed between the user and the object. This emotional connection allows the two to communicate in ways humans and machines can not.

This project spans multiple levels of inhabitancy from the scale of the body to the scale of the city. By perceiving the house and city as a body a relationship forms and breathes a common language with which to communicate.

The concept of the body is abstracted and simplified into the form of in and out holes. The concept is to be projected into the scale of the house, the architecture of our body through the notion of communication pockets that expose the systems underneath the skin such as electricity, water and waste. These pockets force the inhabitants to literally reach into the houses structure to draw from it, providing a platform to develop an intuitive relationship between house and inhabitant. This can also be applied on the city scale through pockets in the ground and surrounding building structures to reconnect us with our environments.

Forming a stronger emotional connection with our surroundings encourages us to be more conscious of our actions and their consequences.
