Inspiration for This Work

The intention of 72 Hours, my final year design project, was to design with a positive social and environmental focus. The project was aimed to provide practical, employment opportunities to craftspeople living in economically impoverished areas in the slums outside Nairobi. Proceeds of sales would also provide access to the drug PEP which is a post-exposure HIV prevention drug.

The concept was inspired by a Masaii saying "The thread follows the path of a needle?that which is leading guides the others". Locally available, recycled materials were used. Wire from the rim of bicycle tyres formed a concept shape that was eventually made from aluminium tube, and the rubber inner tube was threaded to form the upholstery. Leather off cuts were stitched and woven to form another upholstery design.

The stools were exhibited as part of the related events for the International ConnectEd conference at UNSW in July 2007.

Student Biography

As a multi-disciplinary designer my practice is based on designing objects, furniture and textiles with consideration of sustainability, and merges both industrial and recycled materials with elements of the handmade. My designs evolve through direct engagement with material and processes as exploration, experimentation and reinterpretation is central to my design process. The resulting designs are generally organic in concept and form, and attempt to embody elements of poetry, memory and metaphor as a means to add meaning and value to the piece. My recent projects have incorporated waste material that is discarded by industry or the community, and I have found that the challenge of working with this material fuels my creativity. I anticipate that my design practice will involve working with individuals with a similar passion.
