Inspiration for This Work

The male dominated biker and car cult that exists in the suburbs of Sydney, as well as a selection of low-budget Australian biker films I grew up with.

Student Biography

I was born in 1982 into an extremely uncreative family. My high school was stiflingly conservative, only offering specialisation in photography and painting. So I chose painting, however it was the theory of art that I was really passionate about. I started university as a Bachelor art theory student but quickly transferred to Bachelor fine arts after learning about performance and video art; mediums that had been kept from us at school by old fashioned teachers. Since then, my mind has exploded at the possibilities of video and performance when combined. My solo practice mainly gives way to working in collaboration with Brown Council, a group of 4 members who met at COFA in 2004. However, my honours year has allowed me to indulge in my own personal fantasies that are made real through art. I have devoted this year to researching Australian biker culture and my resulting video installation will be an attempt to integrate my female identity into this male dominated culture - something that I would never have the courage to explore in reality.
