Inspiration for This Work

Yoko Ono's conceptual artwork, Light Piece 1963 Autumn.

Carry an empty bag

Go to the top of the hill

Pour all the light you can in it.

Go home when it is dark.

Hang the bag in the middle of your

room in place of a light bulb.

Student Biography

When were you born?

1986.

What is your background?

I was born in Malaysia. We moved to Australia when I was 2 years old. I would say I'm Chinese Malaysian, though I only worked out what that meant when I was 12.

What inspired you to become an artist or designer?

Getting to run around splashing paint and glue whilst the other class was in biology.

Who would you like to work in collaboration with or create something for?

God.

How has your work evolved over the past 3 years?

I have learned to pursue things that actually interest me. I have learned to research my concepts. I have learned to take risks and release control in making.

How can art and design contribute to society?

Art and design can communicate, inspire, encourage, rebuke, protest. It can decorate, advance, comfort, calm, educate, bemuse. It can feed the hungry.

Where would you like to work after university?

I would love to be involved with overseas work. Especially in a place that doesn't have much. I'm thinking income generation, crafts based industries, textiles...
