Inspiration for This Work
Recorded conversations within my domestic maternal space are translated into hand-embroidery and beading. The juxtaposition of the ephemeral beading and the static text act as a visual illusion and allow the eye to follow the pages in an organic and melodic motion.
Student Biography
I was born in Sydney and have had a passion for design and art-making all my life. My textiles practice is centred on the intricate strands of my maternal ancestry and my re-adaptation of our voices as women. The constructs of our language and the hybrid nature of our tongues have caused me to question the notions of story-telling, conversation and the ways in which language is interpreted as a multi-sensorial experience. Through migration and displacement dotting through several places within Europe, North Africa and Australia, we have forged a unique signs system and developed disparate modes of communication that inherently engage all the senses. This in-between state of being has allowed me to re-envisage and interpret our feminist narratives. It has equipped me with the foresight and wisdom to carry these traditions as well as laid the groundings for a transformation in this familial and perpetual personal dialogue.
