Gillian Torok
Inspiration for This Work
The very idea of a 'slab' brings forth notions of flatness and rigidity. These concepts inspired the focus of this piece: free-flowing movement, to counter the ingrained notions of what a slab may be.
Student Biography
When were you born?
January 20th, 1985.
What is your background?
The place I come from springs from rural soil, sits under a Sydney sky, and lies between an Australian and Hungarian heritage.
What inspired you to become an artist or designer?
The pure pleasure that is derived from the act of creating; the pure pleasure that can be granted those who interact with such creations.
How has your work evolved over the past 3 years?
My design practice has evolved to focus on the idea of evolution itself: objects that can change, move, grow, adapt.
Objects that have a life of their own.
How can art and design contribute to society?
Design and 'society' are inextricably linked. Whilst society dictates the most basic needs of design, design has the ability to shape our sensibilities, our values, our beliefs and our everyday lives.
Design can show us who we are, but more than that, it can shape who we are.
