Inspiration for This Work

The project is to design an art district in Bejing which requires both living space and exhibition space for artists. My work is inspired by Go, a Chinese traditional board game, having originated in China around 4,000 years ago. I chose this as the concept because of the interactive patterns that the game produces. It begins with an empty board from which white and black then build up and live together in a way determined by the strategies of the players involved. In this project, I wanted to interpret this 2D interactive and complex pattern into a 3D modular housing system.

Integration and encirclement, with public and private spaces mingled together. This 3D ordered chaos challenges our normal perspective of looking at the functions of spaces. It also provides a unique experience to the end-users, which include artists and their audience.

This project was selected for CONNECTED International Design Conference (Sydney).

Student Biography

When were you born?

April 1984.

What is your background?

I'm from China and I came to Australia when I was 17. My Dad is a calligrapher and my Mum runs her own business.

What inspired you to become an artist or designer?

I have been hugely influenced by my Dad. He is a talented calligrapher, painter and singer. He encourages me to follow my passion for what I'm interested in.

Who would you like to work in collaboration with or create something for?

Architects and landscape designers.

How has your work evolved over the past 3 years?

My work has involved a great deal of multi-cultureal thinking process, especially the "East meets West" thread.

How can art and design contribute to society?

In the era of globalization, art and design can help preserve cultures, raise public awareness and also generate ideas by learning from various cultures.

Where would you like to work after university?

I'd like to do another degree in architecture and work in an architecture company. Meanwhile, I hope to be a freelance graphic designer.
