Inspiration for This Work

This project was about designing costumes for an East Timorese Theatre Company. I learnt the importance of using clear, informative graphics to break the language barrier. I chose colour because it is a "universal colour".

Student Biography

When were you born?

I was born In Kyogle, NSW, Australia.

What is your background?

I grew up in a small country town before moving to Port Macquarie at age 10. I feel growing up in the country allowed me to experience the beautiful natural environment Australia has to offer. I was lucky enough to travel all around Australia with my family throughout my childhood which exposed me to fantastic and inspiring art, design and environments.

What inspired you to become an artist or designer?

I absolutely love colour and patterns found in both the natural and urban environment. I have always been inspired to explore these elements through illustration, painting, textiles and the computer. Studying design was a definite step I wanted to take so I could harness my passions and learn new ways of executing them.

Who would you like to work in collaboration with or create something for?

I love the artist/designer Peter Kolger and the fantastic site specific wallpaper designs he creates. His use of symbols, scale, colour, and his ability to completely transform architecture through pattern inspires me. He eliminates previous connotations of wallpaper by exploring it in a completely new way.

How has your work evolved over the past 3 years?

I have learnt to really experiment and push the boundaries of my work. Constant exploration and development means new exciting designs emerge that I had not previously considered. I now have strong computer skills so my illustrations have become much more dynamic.

How can art and design contribute to society?

I'm interesting in design that is interactive in someway such as Kogler's work. This allows viewers to gather new meaning they never knew existed by watching the way others engage with the design and discusses what the work means to them. I feel art and design has the ability to excite, challenge and transform spaces.

Where would you like to work after university?

There are so many things I would love to try! Working as a milliner in London, being part of a graphic team who creates work for design magazines, designing patterns for textiles and working with an exciting company such as Timorous Beasties are just a few of things I would like to give a go!
