Inspiration for This Work

This piece was designed as a gift for University of New South Wales Graduating students. The piece is made up of three arms which are connected in the centre with a rivet. The arms are based upon the shape of the Gum leaf, which not only references Australia but also illustrates the notion of personal growth and strength.

The central rivet features the UNSW logo and also allows the arms to revolve around it. This kinetic ability represents the notion that the students' future opportunities revolve around their educational achievements.

Student Biography

I was born in Sydney, Paddington actually, however I grew up in Launceston in Tasmania's north. I have to admit I was a typical Tasmanian teenager who just wanted to move to "the mainland", which I eventually did in 2004 to study a Bachelor of Design with the College of Fine Arts, majoring in jewellery and environments.

Since returning to Sydney I have come to appreciate the value and influences of my childhood in Tassie. Growing up, my parents would take my brother, sister and I on adventures to some of the most pristine, inspirational places and they always encouraged an element of creativity in the way we looked at things.

I find that I often look to the natural environment to form ideas and concepts for my designs as well as drawing upon past memories and experiences gained from all facets of life such as travel, people, stories, music...
