Inspiration for This Work

Wrapped and Stacked was inspired by Gaston Bachelard's phenomeological reading of space. In his book 'The Poetics of Space', he vividly describes intimate spaces around the home. For this piece I was trying to suggest the idea of the space between - a hidden space, intimate and private.

Student Biography

When were you born?

I was born in Sydney, Australia in 1985.

What inspired you to become an artist or designer?

When I was in high school, my Year 12 art teacher introduced me to the work of Australian artist John Firth-Smith. I fell in love with his work and realised that I wanted to paint and make art for the rest of my life.

Who would you like to work in collaboration with or create something for?

My two favourite artists at the moment are Lawrence Carroll and Doris Salcedo. I would love to collaborate with either of these two fantastic artists.

How has your work evolved over the past 3 years?

My work has dramatically changed during my four years at COFA. Initially I painted heavily textured paintings using sand and cement mixed in with paint. The second year painting course focused on materiality and alternative supports for painting. This is when my work began to go in a new direction. I am currently combining my love for painting and found objects, to create installations that explore the way we display objects around the home.
