Inspiration for This Work

This project won the Omnium Creative Network Award (ReDesign and ReConstruct proposal award).

I was inspired by the local construction methods and materials used in East Timor.

This portable stage set is provided as a kit and designed to fit in the truck that the performance group is currently using. The kit consists of a series of bamboo sticks with specifically designed dimensions and can be quickly assembled and disassembled using traditional mortise and tenon joint methods.

Instruction booklets are provided and are suitable for different literacy levels.

When were you born?

April 1984.

What is your background?

I'm from China and I came to Australia when I was 17. My Dad is a calligrapher and my Mum runs her own business.

What inspired you to become an artist or designer?

I have been hugely influenced by my Dad. He is a talented calligrapher, painter and singer. He encourages me to follow my passion for what I'm interested in.

Who would you like to work in collaboration with or create something for?

Architects and landscape designers.

How has your work evolved over the past 3 years?

My work has involved a great deal of multi-cultureal thinking process, especially the "East meets West" thread.

How can art and design contribute to society?

In the era of globalization, art and design can help preserve cultures, raise public awareness and also generate ideas by learning from various cultures.

Where would you like to work after university?

I'd like to do another degree in architecture and work in an architecture company. Meanwhile, I hope to be a freelance graphic designer.
